In 1996, Carme Artigas had already convinced herself that the internet is a platform to create new business models. She was 28 years old, and decided to join the world of technological entrepreneurship.

In 1999, “Ericsson Innova” appointed her CEO of the company, to found a venture capital fund at European level, using the internet and anticipating new 3G technology.

Her husband, Jaume Agut, also a chemical engineer, studied at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

Both founded, in 2006, the company Synergic Partners specialized in Big Data and Advanced Analytics.

Shortly after, in less than ten years, Synergic Partners had 70 professionals and was an internationally prestigious company.

Synergic Partners also produced the first generation of data scientists in Spain, a profession that did not exist until then.

Carme Artigas and Jaume Agut created the Synergic Academy division, to help form new profiles and digital talent, both for the Telefónica group and for Synergic Partners’ clients.

In 2015, Synergic was considered one of the world’s most innovative Big Data companies.

So much so that, in November 2015, Synergic Partners was acquired by the Telefónica group, in order to accelerate the adoption of Big Data internally and expand the company internationally.

Carme Artiga held the position of CEO, until the full integration of the company into the Telefónica Group at the end of 2018.

Also, the “Wireless Internet Venture Association” is the result of one of the ideas of Carme Artiga. She is co-founder and president of the executive committee of this association.

Twenty years of intense and productive work endorse the prestige that Carme Artigas has in the business world.

She has been chosen by the US publication “Insights Success” as the only Spanish one among the 30 most influential and internationally recognized directors in the world.

In January 2020, Carme Artigas was named “Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence“, reporting to the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Function.

Participation of Carme Artigas in corporate activities

Many institutions and training centers have been able to take advantage of the availability of Carme Artigas, to spread and stimulate entrepreneurship.

The world event Women in Data Science

Carme Artigas is one of the women who think that it makes no sense for women to have less than 25% participation in the technological world.

So she actively participated in the Women in Data Science (WiDS) organization created by Stanford University with the goal of educating data scientists around the world, regardless of gender, and supporting the role of women in this discipline.

A special focus is placed on Artificial Intelligence, analyzing its impact on business processes and models, as well as talent management and the great challenge of attracting, retaining and developing it in the digital age.

In 2019, a great world event Women in Data Science took place in Madrid, organized by Stanford University. It was the Datathon WiDS, a competition, in which teams of up to 4 members with at least 50% women are admitted.

Carme Artigas was named ambassador for Spain of the Datathon WiDS 2019, in the third edition of this event that started on March 15, 2019.

Carme Artigas is a member of the board of directors of the “Spanish Association of Managers” and of the group “Data Innovation Network” of Columbia University in New York.

She is a collaborator in the “Elcano Royal Institute for International and Strategic Studies“, a think tank and ideas laboratory created in 2001 in Spain.
